About the Project

SmarTimbang is a smart school bag weighing system developed to help students, teachers and schools monitor school bag weight in a simple, fast and meaningful way. Unlike a conventional weighing scale that only displays weight in kilograms, SmarTimbang compares the weight of a student’s school bag with the student’s body weight and automatically calculates the percentage of the load. The system uses a Maker UNO X microcontroller, load cell, HX711 amplifier module, LCD screen, keypad, LED indicators and buzzer. Students first enter their body weight using the keypad before placing their school bag on the weighing platform. The system then calculates the recommended maximum bag weight based on a 15% threshold. A green light indicates a safe load, a blue light provides a caution, while a red light and buzzer warn that the bag is too heavy. SmarTimbang can be used in schools, health rooms and student screening activities to improve awareness of safer school bag habits. It also has educational value as a STEM learning kit, allowing students to learn about sensors, electronics, programming, measurement and problem-solving through hands-on activities. With its practical design, affordable cost and potential for further development, SmarTimbang offers both health-awareness and STEM-learning benefits for the school community.
