About the Project

Smart Hygiene Shield is an innovative touchless automatic handwashing system developed using ultrasonic sensor technology and micro V2 to improve hand hygiene practices among school pupils. This innovation was developed based on observations that most pupils wash their hands for only a short period of about 3 to 5 seconds and do not follow the correct handwashing steps, which may increase the risk of infectious disease transmission in the school environment. The main objective of this innovation is to ensure that pupils wash their hands for at least 20 seconds and develop more consistent and effective personal hygiene practices. In addition, the innovation provides visual and audio guidance on the handwashing steps to help pupils wash their hands correctly. The uniqueness of Smart Hygiene Shield lies in the integration of a touchless system using an ultrasonic sensor with interactive guidance through an LED matrix display and real-time audio instructions, making the handwashing process more systematic, organised, and engaging for pupils. In terms of impact, this innovation can increase pupils’ awareness of the importance of hand hygiene, develop proper handwashing habits, and help reduce the risk of infectious diseases in schools. It also adds value as a STEM learning tool by combining sensor technology, programming, and real-life applications. From a commercialisation perspective, Smart Hygiene Shield has high potential to be marketed to schools, healthcare institutions, and public places due to its simple design, low cost, and use of affordable components. This innovation also has the potential to be further developed as a practical, modern, and user-friendly public health awareness product.
