EduMDAI Ethical Digital Pedagogy Pyramid: A Systematic Human-AI Collaborative Framework for Teaching, Learning and Assessment

About the Project

The rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education presents significant opportunities while raising pedagogical concerns regarding over-reliance on AI, diminished learner autonomy, critical thinking, authentic reflection, and ethical decision-making. The EduMDAI Ethical Digital Pedagogy Pyramid was developed as a pedagogical innovation to systematically orchestrate the roles of humans, digital technologies, and AI throughout the teaching and learning process. The innovation integrates three interconnected structures: Cognitive Structure, Teaching and Learning Implementation Structure, and Assessment Structure. Central to the innovation is a five-phase teaching and learning process that progresses from 100% Human → 100% Human → Human + AI → Human + AI → 100% Human. This Human-in-the-Loop approach positions educators as pedagogical leaders and AI as a navigator rather than a replacement for human thinking. Learners independently establish foundational understanding before collaborating with AI to generate, analyse, evaluate, refine, and construct knowledge or authentic products. The process concludes with human-led reflection to preserve authentic metacognition and learner responsibility. Assessment is systematically aligned through diagnostic, formative, process, authentic/performance, and reflective assessment. The innovation promotes critical thinking, AI literacy, creativity, communication, ethical decision-making, and responsible AI use, while providing educators with a structured approach for purposeful AI integration. Its platform-independent and adaptable design enables application across subjects and face-to-face, blended, and virtual learning environments. Overall, the EduMDAI Ethical Digital Pedagogy Pyramid shifts educational AI integration from technology-driven adoption towards a systematic, human-centred, assessable, and ethically guided pedagogical process in which AI empowers rather than replaces human intelligence.
