Children's Story Writing with StoryScale Benchmark Framework

About the Project

Developing engaging, age-appropriate, and educationally effective children's stories remains challenging because existing writing resources rely largely on intuition, general writing advice, or readability measures that are not specifically designed for children's literature. StoryScale addresses this gap by providing an evidence-based benchmark framework developed through corpus linguistic analysis of 146 Aesop's Fables. The framework evaluates stories using five measurable dimensions: readability, sentence complexity, CEFR vocabulary, lexical diversity, and narrative organisation. These benchmarks are translated into practical resources, including story development guidelines, narrative organisation guidelines, and benchmark indicators that support both story writing and evaluation. By integrating corpus linguistics, readability assessment, CEFR vocabulary profiling, and narrative analysis into a single framework, StoryScale provides structured guidance for writers, educators, researchers, and publishers. The framework promotes the development of high-quality children's stories that are linguistically appropriate, educationally effective, and consistent, while supporting literacy development and English language learning.
