About the Project
This school-based project aims to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience by preserving and sharing traditional local knowledge related to disaster risk reduction. It promotes collaboration among students, teachers, elders, parents, and community leaders to enhance safety awareness while safeguarding cultural heritage. Students will conduct interviews to collect traditional knowledge on predicting, preparing for, and responding to disasters such as floods, storms, and fires. The information gathered will be transformed into bilingual (Malay and English) posters, illustrated cards, and infographics displayed in a dedicated Safety Corner at school. An awareness session will further encourage active learning through student presentations and demonstrations of selected preparedness skills, including secure knot tying, improvised rainwater collection, and emergency kit preparation. With a minimal budget of RM50 and the use of recycled materials, the project emphasises affordability, sustainability, and community participation. The Safety Corner will serve as a permanent educational resource to promote continuous learning and awareness. Ultimately, this initiative seeks to integrate traditional wisdom with modern disaster preparedness practices, empowering the school community to build a safer, more sustainable, and resilient future.
