About the Project

Introduction: Learning abstract core subjects in nursing education frequently escalates extraneous cognitive load among undergraduate students. Traditional instructional methods relying on static two-dimensional (2D) textbook illustrations force students to perform mental spatial rotations to comprehend bodily structures. This visualization constraint not only induces mental fatigue but also decreases student engagement within the classroom. Objective: The NURSE-VR 5.0 innovation is introduced not to develop new software from scratch, but rather as an instructional integration model that utilizes ready-made Virtual Reality (VR) hardware available in the market to reduce cognitive load, mitigate classroom boredom, and enhance academic self-efficacy. Methodology: This exploratory qualitative descriptive study was conducted on a purposive sample of 18 first-year undergraduate nursing students enrolled in the Anatomy and Physiology course at Kolej Poly-Tech MARA Kota Bharu. Textual data were digitally gathered via open-ended questionnaires deployed on Google Forms post-immersive laboratory sessions and analyzed using the Reflexive Thematic Analysis framework. Innovation Findings: The empirical results demonstrate that this ready-made VR integration model is highly effective. The burden of internal mental spatial rendering was successfully offloaded onto the digital device interface. Students were able to manipulate, rotate, zoom, and peel 3D volumetric organ asset layers in real-time. Consequently, extraneous cognitive load dropped drastically, classroom drowsiness was eliminated, long-term memory retention was reinforced, and clinical confidence was boosted to bridge the theory-practice gap before hospital placements. Future Replicability & Value: The NURSE-VR 5.0 model is holistically structured with high scalability to be deployed across all courses within the nursing curriculum in the future. This identical device-integration framework is ready to be expanded for critical subjects such as Pharmacology (dynamic visualization of drug-receptor interactions in bloodstreams) and Emergency/Trauma simulations. This innovation is highly cost-effective, practical, and easily replicable by global health science institutions to actively support the Education 5.0 ecosystem.
