About the Project
This study investigates the potential of seashell waste as an alternative sustainable material for radiation shielding applications. Seashells, which contain high concentrations of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), will be processed into fine powders and incorporated into a suitable binding matrix to fabricate shielding samples with different compositions. The physical, structural, and morphological properties will be characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Radiation attenuation performance will be evaluated using selected radioactive sources. The linear attenuation coefficient and half-value layer will be determined to assess shielding effectiveness and potential applications in radiation protection.
