About the Project

Corporate tax adjustment can be challenging for accounting students because it requires them to distinguish between allowable expenses, non-allowable expenses, qualifying double deductions and different categories of income. Although students are generally familiar with how Net Profit Before Tax (NPBT) is derived from the Statement of Profit or Loss, they may struggle to determine whether an accounting item should be added, given nil treatment or deducted for tax purposes. This can lead to reliance on memorised computation formats, without fully understanding the rationale for each adjustment. To address this learning difficulty, the Work Backward Method (WBM) was developed as a structured teaching approach that begins with NPBT and guides students to trace how each accounting item was originally treated in arriving at accounting profit. WBM applies reverse accounting logic by asking whether the original accounting treatment should be reversed, retained or further adjusted for tax purposes. A non-allowable expense that was originally deducted is added back, an allowable expense requires no further adjustment, non-business income included in accounting profit is deducted and classified separately, while qualifying expenditure may receive a further deduction where statutory conditions are satisfied. Students then compute forward to determine Adjusted Business Income under Section 4(a) of the Income Tax Act 1967. The novelty of WBM lies in integrating NPBT as the starting point, reverse accounting logic, tax-treatment reasoning and a structured ADD–NIL–DEDUCT decision pathway. The method is supported by a worked example, worksheet and infographic that help students connect the original accounting treatment with the appropriate tax treatment. Preliminary classroom observations suggest greater confidence and less reliance on lecturer guidance; however, formal evaluation has not yet been conducted. WBM also has potential for further development into interactive digital modules, worksheets, training resources and additional worked examples for wider use in taxation education and professional training. The WBM teaching materials have received a Certificate of Notification of Copyright from MyIPO. By shifting tax adjustment from memorisation to reasoning, WBM provides a clear and systematic pathway for students to understand not only what adjustment to make, but why the adjustment is required.
