About the Project
SMARTBIN: Smart Waste Sorting System Improper waste separation is a common environmental issue caused by mixed waste, inconsistent sorting practices, and limited awareness among users. SMARTBIN is an innovative automated waste sorting system designed to assist users in separating waste efficiently and systematically. The system integrates sensors, a microcontroller, and servo motors to detect predefined types of waste and direct them into the appropriate compartments. A fill-level sensor is also incorporated to monitor the capacity of each compartment and provide an alert when the bin is nearly full. The proposed system aims to reduce incorrect waste separation, minimise manual sorting, and encourage responsible waste management. SMARTBIN can be tested by comparing its sorting accuracy with conventional manual waste separation using a controlled number of waste items. The innovation supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 9, 11, 12, and 13 by promoting technological innovation, sustainable communities, responsible consumption, and environmentally conscious waste management.
