About the Project

Household food waste represents a critical global issue that severely impacts economic stability and increases landfill greenhouse gas emissions. The high volume of domestic food waste is primarily driven by poor expiration tracking and a lack of practical ideas to utilize remaining kitchen ingredients before spoilage. This study aims to develop PanganLokal, an innovative mobile application powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) designed to optimize household ingredient management. PanganLokal integrates image recognition technology for quick inventory scanning, automated expiration alerts, and an AI recommendation engine that suggests authentic local recipes based on available leftovers. Developed using a User-Centered Design (UCD) prototyping framework, PanganLokal demonstrates the potential to reduce household food waste by up to 30% while minimizing daily grocery expenditure for families and students. Furthermore, this innovation directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). PanganLokal offers a practical, economic, and scalable solution to foster sustainable food consumption habits in everyday households.
