Malaysia Grand Invention Expo 2026 The Missing Sound Mission: AEIOU Vowel Friends 1 Muhammad Aidil Mohamad Khasir, 2 Fatin Nurayuni Roduwan, 3 Nur Athirah Khairul, 4 Nooraini Ab. Latif Malay Studies Department Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Perlis Email: g-ipgp24231505@moe-dl.edu.my ABSTRACT The Missing Sound Mission: AEIOU Vowel Friends is an interactive digital learning kit developed to support the mastery of listening and speaking skills among Year 1 pupils in the Malay Language subject. This innovation focuses on introducing the five vowels, namely A, E, I, O and U, in accordance with the Year 1 Malay Language Curriculum and Assessment Standard Document (DSKP), particularly Content Standard 1.1, which focuses on listening and responding, and Learning Standard 1.1.1, which emphasises the skills of imitating and pronouncing vowel sounds. This kit aims to help pupils identify vowels, recognise their sounds through listening, and pronounce simple words based on pictures and audio. The learning process consists of three main activities. The first activity, Vowel Island, introduces vowel sounds through a song video, pictures and audio pronunciations of words such as chicken, eagle, duck, octopus and snake. The second activity, Fishing Game, provides pupils with opportunities to recognise and match vowels through an interactive game. The third activity, Fruit Eating Challenge, assesses pupils' ability to select pictures of fruits based on the vowel sounds they hear, namely apple, orange and grape. The uniqueness of this innovation lies in the integration of audio, visual, avatar and gamification elements into a single digital learning resource. In addition, immediate feedback through the messages “Syabas! Jawapan tepat” and “Alamak, sila cuba lagi” enables pupils to identify the accuracy of their answers and make corrections immediately. This kit has the potential to be used as a teaching aid by Year 1 Malay Language teachers, remedial teachers and preschool teachers, while also supporting flexible and repeated self-directed learning. Overall, this innovation offers an engaging, interactive and pupil-friendly learning approach to strengthen basic vowel recognition and support the development of early Malay Language literacy.
