About the Project
Food insecurity remains a critical global challenge despite the enormous amount of food wasted each year. According to the UNEP Food Waste Index Report 2024, approximately 1.05 billion tonnes of food were wasted worldwide in 2022, while millions of people continued to experience hunger. In Malaysia, welfare homes, orphanages, elderly care centres, and food banks rely heavily on public donations, yet food supplies are often insufficient due to the lack of an intelligent system to monitor inventory levels and communicate urgent needs in real time. HungerSense AI: Smart Food Rescue System is proposed as an innovative solution that integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Google Teachable Machine, ultrasonic sensors, wireless communication, and a mobile application to improve food inventory monitoring and distribution. Ultrasonic sensors will detect food levels, while Google Teachable Machine will identify food categories such as tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, and apples. When food levels fall below a predefined threshold, the system will automatically generate alerts through the mobile application to notify registered donors and nearby volunteers. AI will analyse food type, quantity, and location to facilitate timely food donations to welfare homes in need. By enabling real-time monitoring and intelligent food matching, HungerSense AI aims to reduce food waste, improve food distribution efficiency, and strengthen food security for vulnerable communities. This innovation supports SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by improving access to food and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting sustainable food management practices.
