About the Project

Malaysia discards about 17,000 tonnes of food every day, around 4,000 tonnes of which is still edible, while many families continue to face food insecurity. The surplus and the need exist side by side; what is missing is a fast, safe and trusted way to connect them before the food spoils. FoodRescuer is an Android application that links four groups in one real-time ecosystem: businesses post surplus food, verified charities and families claim it, trained volunteer drivers called Rescue Rangers deliver it, and administrators verify every user. Built with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose on Firebase, it shows the halal status of every listing, limits instant claims to each receiver's registered beneficiaries so that sharing stays fair, and confirms every handover with QR codes at pickup and delivery. Listings expire automatically once their pickup time passes, so unsafe food is never delivered. A Rescue Academy trains drivers in food safety before they can accept jobs, and a points system with sponsored rewards keeps volunteers engaged. To operate without paid customer service staff, FoodRescuer includes Rescue Buddy, a Gemini-powered assistant that answers users instantly in their own language and hands complex cases to a volunteer administrator together with an AI-written summary. Every completed rescue becomes impact data on food saved, meals served and CO₂ emissions avoided, and donors can export an impact certificate as verifiable evidence for sustainability reporting under Malaysia's National Sustainability Reporting Framework. FoodRescuer supports SDGs 2, 12 and 13 and offers a low-cost, scalable model for community food resilience.
