About the Project

Malaysia’s Employees Provident Fund (EPF) operates primarily as a defined contribution retirement system in which members accumulate savings throughout their working lives. However, retirement savings that are withdrawn and managed individually may expose retirees to income depletion, longevity risk, and insufficient income protection for surviving spouses. This project proposes the EPF Lifetime Pension Model, an actuarial retirement-income framework designed to convert accumulated EPF savings into structured monthly income throughout retirement. The model offers two payout options: a Whole Life Annuity for single members and a Joint-and-Survivor Annuity for married couples. Actuarial survival probabilities and financial discounting are used to determine sustainable monthly pension amounts according to demographic characteristics and household circumstances. As a proof of concept, an accumulated retirement fund of RM240,000 at a 5% assumed dividend rate generates estimated monthly pensions of RM1,871 for a single male, RM1,718 for a single female, and RM1,691 for a married couple, with approximately RM846 per month continuing to the surviving spouse under a 50% survivor benefit. Beyond individual retirement planning, the model has potential applications in retirement policy evaluation, EPF payout design, and the development of annuity-based retirement products by insurers and takaful operators. By shifting the focus from lump-sum retirement wealth to sustainable lifetime income, the innovation aims to strengthen retirement-income security, household resilience, and the long-term sustainability of Malaysia’s ageing society.
