About the Project

The Eco Hero Hub Recycling System of SJKC Tai Tong Sandakan is an innovative school-based environmental management system designed to transform recycling activities into a systematic, measurable, engaging and sustainable practice. The project was developed in response to the need for a more effective method of recording recycling participation, monitoring recyclable materials, encouraging healthy competition and increasing students’ awareness of environmental responsibility. The Eco Hero Hub integrates recycling collection, digital record management, participation tracking, achievement recognition and environmental impact measurement into one coordinated system. Students and participants are encouraged to contribute recyclable materials such as plastic bottles, paper, cardboard, metal and other appropriate recyclable items. Their contributions and participation are recorded systematically, allowing the school to monitor individual and group achievements. Participants can progress through an Eco Hero badge system, creating a sense of achievement and motivating students to participate continuously. One of the key features of the system is its ability to estimate the carbon footprint that can be saved through recycling activities. This converts recycling efforts into meaningful environmental indicators that students can understand and appreciate. Instead of viewing recycling merely as waste collection, students are able to see the relationship between their actions, resource conservation, waste reduction and climate action. The project also promotes gamification and healthy competition through achievement levels, badges, records and recognition. This approach encourages active participation while developing values such as responsibility, teamwork, leadership and environmental stewardship. Teachers can use the collected data to monitor progress, evaluate programme effectiveness and plan further environmental activities. The Eco Hero Hub supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. The system also provides opportunities for collaboration with parents, community organisations, government agencies and industry partners. The innovation demonstrates that a school recycling programme can be transformed from a conventional collection activity into a data-driven, educational and motivational environmental ecosystem. Its simple concept, flexible implementation and potential for digital expansion make the Eco Hero Hub suitable for adaptation and replication by other schools and organisations. Ultimately, the Eco Hero Hub Recycling System aims to cultivate a generation of environmentally responsible students who do not merely recycle, but understand, measure and take ownership of the environmental impact of their actions. Through the combination of technology, education, recognition and community participation, the project contributes towards building a more sustainable and environmentally conscious school community.
