About the Project

Introductory quantity surveying courses often pose substantial conceptual and computational challenges to novice learners. In Introduction to Builders’ Quantity and Estimating (DBT233), these challenges are reflected in persistently high failure rates exceeding 10% across semesters. To address this, we developed BQE_BOT: Builders' Quantity and Estimating AI Assistant for Tender & Contract, a chatbot-based learning application, as a supplementary resource for third-semester Diploma in Construction Technology (BE126) students. It supports flexible, self-paced learning and can be accessed anytime on mobile phones, computers, or tablets. This study aimed to evaluate the extent to which BQE_BOT enhances students' understanding of DBT233 content, especially for the Tender and Contract subtopic. The study used a hands-on, pre-post survey approach with 200 students. Participants first attended conventional lectures and received access to BQE_BOT only after completing each topic. Survey instruments then captured their perceptions before and after using the application. The findings show that most respondents were highly satisfied with BQE_BOT and found it very helpful in deepening their comprehension of the subject. Emphasising the flexibility and accessibility of this approach can help students and educators feel more supported and confident in adopting innovative learning tools.
