About the Project
BioCheck is a low-cost natural pH indicator sticker developed using anthocyanin extracted from red cabbage. The project was inspired by the natural colour-changing properties of anthocyanin when exposed to different pH conditions. Red cabbage was processed to obtain the anthocyanin extract, which was then used to dye filter paper and form the indicator component of the sticker. BioCheck is designed to be placed on the inside of a food container lid without directly touching the food. As food is stored, changes in the container environment can occur due to the release of volatile compounds and changes in moisture and acidity. These changes can affect the chemical environment around the indicator. When the environment changes, the anthocyanin molecules interact differently with the surrounding conditions, causing the sticker to change colour. This provides a simple visual indication of changes in the pH environment inside the container. The prototype requires no batteries, electronics, or complicated equipment, making it suitable as a low-cost student innovation.
